Jul 02 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Maryborough Final game at the Titles for Division 1 position 11/12
We started really well, attacking M'boro with good runs by Mitch supported well by Luis and Luke. We had a number of good chances but didn't manage to convert and M'boro started to come back. We had difficulty clearing the ball out and unfortunately conceded a short corner from which M'boro scored first. The momentum swung 180 degrees and after a long week of hockey games the boys couldn't turn it around. It was unfortunate because if we had managed to score in the first 15 mins, I think the result would have been quite different. It wasn't to be and the result ended at 0-1 to Mary.
Our overall position was 12th, which will keep us in Division 1 at next years State Titles. |
Jul 01 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Gold Coast When we played the Gold Coast last, it was in Warwick on a cold and bumpy field, where they ran through us 5-2. This time it was a scorching Rockhampton on fluffy grass. The game was pretty close to start, but like at Warwick the Gold Coast got into the groove earlier and kept us pinned in our half. We managed to keep them out well, but couldn't get the ball in their half long enough to make a goal. Unfortunately we conceeded a soft goal and that was the final result 0-1.

Jun 30 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Brisbane 1 Given our recent success with the Brisbane2 team we were again hopeful of creating an upset against the top side in the pool. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and when we were down 3 goals in 15 minutes it wasn't looking great to keep them down below 10. We conceeded 2 more before half time and at 5-0, we had to work very hard to keep them back. To be fair Brisbane1 are a really good team and some of the goals were quite brilliant. We defended very well in the second half, only conceeding 2 goals. Matt Wall had another huge game in defence intercepting a number of attacking moves. Matt also gave us our biggest scare when he copped a full blooded hit to the elbow and we thought it was going to be a trip to the hospital. Luckily he's made of tougher stuff and after a bit of ice treatment, he was okay. The final score was 0-7 but it was an interesting stat that from 7 penalty corners, Brisbane scored just one time. |
Jun 30 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Brisbane 2 Having played Brisbane 2 before in Coulter shield we knew there was a reasonable chance of getting a draw and possibly a win out of this game. Brisbane 2 have been quite strong during this competition, so it wasn't going to be easy. It was made significantly harder when we started slowly and conceeded a goal in less than 1 minute. This was definitely not in the game plan and we quickly had to sharpen our act. After a much better rest of the half we began to put pressure on Brisbane with some good jinking runs up the field by Luis and Mitchel. In the second half all of the pressure finally resulted in a goal, a great shot by Mitchel beat the keeper deflected out off the post and Luke was perfectly in position on the post to slot it away. We continued on the attack and had a number of very good chances, but couldn't quite convert. A 1-1 result against Brisbane 2 was a good result. |
Jun 29 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Cairns The boys again dug deep on the last game of the day to go toe to toe with Cairns. Mitch converted a penalty corner early to give us an early lead and we were looking good even though Cairns were running a number of attacks against us. We conceeded a number of penalty corners, one which they converted to tie the game up. Cairns started to get on top and were awarded a Penalty Stroke, but Wil stopped the momentum by making a brillant save and the boys picked up the tempo again. Our defence was playing perfectly, cutting out numbers of attacks by pushing Cairns wide and intercepting the ball in the middle of the field. Mitch and Luis had strong games in the centre of the park, with a number of significant runs to keep the pressure on Cairns. In a second half goal mouth scramble, Cairns were awared another stroke, this time Ed (in goals) made a valiant dive to deflect it on his stick side, but just missed to give Cairns the lead. We really desearved a draw, create a number of good chances, but just didn't manage to get the equaliser. It was our best game yet and the boys really gave it their all.

Jun 29 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Townsville 1 Townsville 1 are another strong team in this tournament, so we knew it was going to be tough. We started flat and conceeded a goal in the first couple of minutes. Not an ideal start but the boys regrouped and held Townville to the one goal until half time. Much like the Rockhampton game, Townville stepped up and we went a bit flat and paid with 3 more goals to a final score of 0-4.

Jun 28 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Gympie Playing Gympie on grass that hasn't been mowed for weeks was never going to be easy and we had our normal arm wrestle in the first half. Both teams had scored 1 goal at half time, ours coming from a short corner attack and a goal to Mitch that he won't be putting in his classics collection, but happy to put on the score board. Playing was difficult in the centre of the field as all of the technical players were having trouble with the long grass. Luke, Dylan and Liam really played well on the wings moving the ball up the field with speed. We had control of the game in the second half, but it was difficult to see where the next goal would come. After much pressure and another short corner attack, Mitch took a shot that would have gone into the classics collection, but it was partially saved only for the ball to bounce up waist high and Ellery was on hand to miss hit a baseball shot into the goal. An emphatic goal for the team and a great way to end the day. |
Jun 28 U13-Boys State Titles Rocky - Vs Rockhampton 1 Opening game of the tournament, against the host team, on the show court. After an early breakfast, delays in team sheets, extra hygene checks, stick checks, forgotten socks, mouthguards, white shoes and a mix-up in dig-outs, I thought we would be in for a hiding to nothing. The opposite occured, we started collected and in control and were matching Rockhampton until late in the first half when we conceeded a counter attack goal. Maybe the coco-pop breakfast didn't have enough sugar for two halves, we may never know, but Rockhampton steped up a gear in the second half and we probably missed a gear, finally conceeding 4 second half goals for a final score of 0-5.
A bit disappointing after such a promising start, but getting Rockhampton in the opening game was always going to be difficult. |
May 16 U13-Boys U13 Coulter Shield - Round 1 Warwick Round 1 of the Coulter shield was a hard day at the office for the team. It was a cold Warick morning and an equally slow start for the boys. Our first game was against Tweed Heads, who settled into the game much earlier and through a few small mistakes saw us go down 3 goals to none. We had two more really evenly matched games, but unfortunately some soft goals undid a lot of hard work and we lost both.
Due to last minute changes in the draw we had an extra game against Gympie, and finally our first game on artificial turf. Both teams were dead on their feet, but our boys managed to put together some phases of good passing and co-orindated attacks to come out with a well deserved draw. After such a long day it was a great result to finish on and the boys really earned their sleep on the drive back.

May 02 U13-Boys U13 Boys Wide Bay Carnival Report The Wide Bay carnival was a great start for the U13 Boys.
Two days of hockey at beachside Hervey Bay versing Hervey Bay (1 and 2 teams), Maryborough and Gympie teams.
The first game, was against the second of two Hervey Bay sides and an ideal first match for our newly formed U13 rep side. Although we have had a number of training sessions, there is nothing like a real match to see how well the team would gell. The result was an emphatic 5-0 win to the Sunshine Coast and immediately showed that our team had natural attacking flair.
The second game was against Maryborough and a bit of a reality check for players and parents alike. The Maryborough team were very organised in defence and were fast on the counter attack, finding us short a number of times. Maryborough ran out convincing winners and we headed off knowing we had to put more effort into our defense.
The following day we played against the top Hervey Bay side and it was a very even match up. We scored an early goal, but inspite of a number of close efforts could not get another one to consolidate the lead. Likewise, Hervey Bay had a number of good attempts but our fast improving defence held them out. Hervey Bay managed to get an equaliser in the last few minutes, disappointing, but probably a fair result.
Our last game was against Gympie, who at that stage were undefeated and needed to beat us to win the carnival. All weekend, the team looked good in attack and our defence was getting better with each game. It was a great match, fast and closely fought. We scored quite early in the game, a great shot by Luis into the upper left hand corner gave their goal keeper absolutely no chance. The game proceeded into a bit of an arm wrestle, we battled on and Tom scored a goal by slicing the ball right across the goal and into the left corner. A great consoldating goal, late in the second half. Both Ed and Will kept brilliantly and our defense repelled a number of very close attempts to keep Gympie scoreless.
For the carnival overall, we tied with Gympie on points, but with a better for and against, Gympie moved into second place behind Maryborough.
From the manager's and coaches perspective it was an almost a perfect start to the rep season. Being a newly formed team, we needed to make a series of positional changes during each game. This can sometimes be disruptive to younger players, but the boys proved that they were adaptable and played well, even in positions that were foreign. The level of passing and talking between the players was good and the backing up was excellent. There were so many good performances it is impossible to single out any individual for praise. We just have a really good team and they should be proud. I should however thank Mike for being the team captain for the carnival, a resposibility he held very well.
We are all looking forward to the next match. |
